The following table outlines the data-elements used to compile the file. Each tag starts a new line and is used in the order listed below. Examples of use follow the table.
It may be helpful to think of the structure of the following table as that of a pine tree. It branches out as with each data-element group. Data-element groups have start tags beginning with the letter "t", for example, t0, t1, t2, t3.

| _st | Structure type | A code that tells the digital library what kind of material is being structured and how to process it. Refer to the section Compiling a Dataset.toc for more detailed information. |
| _fi | Formats Included | List the code for all of the formats of files that are included in the accompanying directory. (A separate MF tag for each format is also required) Codes: TIFF, JPEG, PDF, TEXT, HTML. REPEAT the field when multiple formats are relevant. |
| _fn | Formats Needed | List the code for all of the formats of files to be created as part of the load process into the digital library. Codes: TIFF, JPEG, PDF, TEXT, HTML. REPEAT the field when multiple formats are relevant. |
| _pc | Project Code | List the project code this is relevant for the resource. REPEAT the field when multiple codes apply. |

| _ft | File Title | Full title of the bibliographic unit as recorded in the 245 field of the QF cataloging record. |
| _fa | File Author | Author's full name as recorded in the QF cataloging record. |
| _cr | Copyright Statement | Record any copyright acknowledgement or restrictions that apply to the digitized version. If the source document is public domain, do not use this element. If the source document was digitized with permission, indicate the copyright holder and any restrictions that apply to use of these materials, as negotiated by your institution. |
