About The Collection
Images from Mile Markers: Linking Keys History depict the diverse cultural history and economic development of the Florida Keys. Early industries such as sponging, shark fishing, turtle canning, and cigar manufacturing are illustrated in vivid detail. Of special interest are the images of the building of Flagler's Florida East Coast Railway, construction of the Overseas Highway (designated a Florida Scenic Highway), development of the tourism industry, and the aftermath of devastating hurricanes. Images of the unique architecture, famous faces, and ambience of the turn-of-the-century Key West are given particular attention in addition to the sea, sun, fishing, and fun often associated with Keys vacations. Views of Keys nature and wildlife are also present. The original images are maintained at the Monroe County Public Library's Local History Department in Key West, Florida and the Helen Wadley Islamorada Branch Library, Mile Marker 81.5, Islamorada, Florida.
