Florida Architecture
and Landscape Design is a collection of resources describing
and illustrating architecture, architectural practice, landscape
design, and landscaping in Florida. The core of this collection
is the publications of the Florida Association of the American
Institute of Architects. Continuing additions to this core form
a documentary library of Florida's architecture and landscape
design. Historic collections illustrate the "Cracker style" of
northern Florida, the Caribbean designs of southern Florida,
and the architecture and landscaping of tourist destinations
across the state.
The collection includes
journals and monographs and a growing number of archival, promotional
and planning documents. Among archival materials are the photographs
and letters of Florida architects and landscape designers. Promotional
materials include postcards and pamphlets illustrating architecture
and landscaping. And, planning documents include plans, maps,
and technical drawings.
Florida Architecture
and Landscape Design began as means of making available scarce
early issues of the Florida Association of the American Institute
of Architects publications. The Project, proposed in 2000 by
the University of Florida's Architecture and Fine Arts Library
in partnership with the Florida Association of the American Institute
of Architects and the Florida Center for Library Automation (FCLA),
intends to build an openly-accessible collection of digital materials
documenting architecture, interior design, and landscape architecture
throughout Florida. Digital collections will represent all of
Florida's regional styles together with influences from outside
of Florida.
The Project is supported,
largely, by the University of Florida and, in part, through a
central fund created by the university library directors of the
Florida Board of Education's Division of Colleges and Universities
(DCU). Image storage, retrieval and website maintenance are provided
by FCLA.
Ongoing project oversight
is provided by the University of Florida's Digital Library Center
and the Digitization Services Planning Committee, a standing
committee of the DCU libraries.
